“It’s a go,” Jeff said while I was getting my first cup of coffee. “What is?” I asked. “The roof. We start today.” His eyes were alive with excitement. Well, I woke up fast!
An hour later, Jeff had put metal scaffolding in place to make it possible. (I don’t even know where he got it from — some friend’s yard, I think.) An hour after that, three men arrived to help…and an hour or two after that, the first truss was up, rising some 20 feet into the air as The Cabin at Many Moons began to take its final shape. It’s just one truss, but still a milestone.
I couldn’t watch much, as this part makes me a bit nervous. I like heights! I’ve done sky-diving and rapelling off of cliffs. But there’s something about this process…the risk of injury seemed too high for my taste. But it did work, as it usually does with Jeff, even if it seems somewhat haphazard to me. Photos below.
Standing on borrowed metal scaffolding, Jeff and his son Josh raise the first half of the first truss; 17 more will follow to make up the structure of the main roof.
With the first half up, Jeff discusses the next step with Josh and neighbors Doug and Bruce as grandson Jaxtyn plays on the lumber. All of that lumber will make up the roof sometime soon.
And the second half is up!
I wanted a steeper roof, to give that “cabin look,” but wow. It really is high. This will create an airy feeling in the living area, which will have a cathedral ceiling. You can see the covered porch on the left starting to take shape also.
Imagine standing in the entrance hall, looking towards the water.
Jeff’s grandson Jaxtyn (Josh’s son) just turned three. His genes are obvious!
Jaxtyn takes a lunch break as Jayda sniffs. 😄 That nutty dog chases sticks, rocks, snowballs, and chunks of ice.
So this is what DIY construction looks like. I still wish we’d hired a crew…but I am impressed.
And I’m glad to be done cutting down trees for now because this is the result of the past week while we waited for trusses. More to do this fall and winter!
Wow! Hats off to Jeff and his crew.

While this extraordinary feat is nerve wracking to watch, Jaxton is a hoot to track. Another generation of DIY is in training. 🚜🛠️
