Sunrise, Sunset, Roofs & Flies…

The musical “Fiddler on the Roof” includes a catchy song called “Sunrise, Sunset.” (If you know it, the refrain is playing in your mind right now.) In between some beautiful sunrises and sunsets, we are fiddling with a roof…but not yet on it…while fighting flies. Ticks in June, wasps in July, black flies in August and mosquitoes all summer! Some days I wonder why I’m building here in the north woods. Then I see one of these nature displays and I remember. Examples below, along with the latest advancement on our slowly emerging roof.

The main reason I sleep in a tent when I have a more comfortable camper nearby (cabin to come!) is to wake in time for this kind of sunrise. Huron Bay has been calm a lot lately.
The same sunrise, from the other side of the dock, lights up the waterfront grasses….
…and finally rises above the horizon. I took this shot right in front of my tent.
Three wind socks fly at Camp Many Moons…a Finnish one, a Navy one, and of course this. These quiet early-mornings have been wonderful!
What about sunset? For that, we need to drive west. I often drive to a certain beach about six miles away, but just discovered this option much closer. I’ve come here in the daytime to find rocks, but now know that I can find sunset here, too. Isn’t it fun how you can discover new delights close-by? You just have to break your patterns.
And then, the roof. Since my last post, the full east wall has taken shape…more complex than the others because of the covered porch and gabled end. We have an hourly worker sort of on-call now, who lives close-by and knows roofs and construction, so Jeff and I are not raising these on our own. (In fact, I’m not participating in this part.) But it’s slow-going right now as we try to find the right people and equipment to do the rest. Stay tuned…
I leave you with one of my favorite sunrise pictures…leaving Munising, Michigan last July as we neared the end of the 6,000-mile boat journey called The Great Loop. I disliked the many early wake-up’s on that journey, but always loved sunrise. (To peruse the PDF photo brief about the Great Loop journey by the Mainship Many Moons, click here.)

  1. wow. You are making progress. And the sunset/sunrises photo are why we all live up here. I’ve been sick so down for the count the past 2 days, but I’m on the mend. Deck almost stained entirely, got some kayaking in this un-Summer–except for a few hot days. Helped host the Baraga County Historical Museum’s 30th anniversary open house Saturday and enjoy the Jazz band from Detroit on Friday, at the Whirligig. Bennie DaBeagle is Beagle bugling right now and I’m having coffee in the rain. Your house will be so amazing. Can’t wait to see you n Jefferoo sitting on the porch, enjoying the view!
