We Passed! On to Insulation!

The State of Michigan has given its approval. We can insulate the Cabin at Many Moons. Yay.

I say “the state” because individual states issue building codes, and state inspectors enforce them. Three such inspectors visited us recently, and all gave us their go-ahead. Whew.

These so-called rough inspections must occur before insulating because inspectors need to see that we’re following state codes in the stuff that will be hidden behind that insulation. Codes are meant to protect the homeowner and the community. Knowing and following the building codes (which in this state encompass electrical, mechanical and plumbing) is a pain for any home-builder, especially DIY-ers like us. They differ from state to state; Florida and Virginia have some of the strongest building codes, according to International Code Council, although folks here seem to feel that Michigan codes are stronger than they should be. Complaining about codes — and regulations generally — is a kind of pastime around here. My view is that most are well-intentioned, some necessary, and a few excessive. But then, my perspective comes from witnessing arguments about regulation at the highest (even White House) levels and sometimes participating. I remember the tangle of reasons, concerns, worries. Determining “the greater good” for a population of 332 million (U.S.) or 10 million (Michigan) is pretty hard. (To read about building codes, click here.)

And here’s the biggest news: insulation is scheduled for tomorrow! When we told the contractor we’ve passed “the roughs,” he found a slot for us right away! So we hustled to clean up and are excited to see what tomorrow brings. Stay tuned to find out what kind of insulation we’re getting…because that, too, is a big choice among so many when immersed in new-home construction. Recent updates follow in photos and captions…

The mechanical inspector came Monday. You know it’s an inspector who just drove up because of this sticker on the vehicle. I’m still confused about just how the mechanical inspection differs from the plumbing and electrical, but never mind–I paid the fees and we passed.
One more sticker to display! 🙂
The plumbing inspector was scheduled for the next day, so Jeff hustled to prepare. We had to ensure the water is moving everywhere it should be, without leaks. It was.
The plumbing inspector examined Jeff’s work….
…and added his sticker to the others. Good job, Jeff! We can’t wait for insulation, as it’s been tough to work in the cold. The concrete floor creates a kind of ice box (though it will be a source of heat later, once hot water circulates under it) and the wood stove can’t do much.
Between inspections, Jeff filled the water tank at his cabin. He brings this tank down to the waterfront to fill it from our well, then hauls it to his cabin and drains it into his own tank. Considering that Jeff is a “brittle” Type-1 diabetic, it’s amazing what he achieves. (A benefit of being “a stubborn Swede? 😉 ) He gets help from the latest software, which knows when his body needs insulin and delivers it for him. Thank goodness for medical technology. He spent many years giving himself multiple shots a day!
We got the word this morning that insulation can take place tomorrow, so we hustled to clean the place up.
Along with the good news, we have warmer weather. Gray has given way to clear and this reflected-sunset glow on Huron Bay. This is the view from the front porch.
This is the south-side porch. I’m researching what kind of ground cover to use. I don’t want a big lawn. Maybe Creeping Jenny? A lot of things won’t work up here in the far north.
The pets are both inland now, and I miss them when I’m on the waterfront, but they like the woods. Boo explores outside Jeff’s cabin but doesn’t stay out long. She weighs just six pounds, but thinks she’s a panther, until….
…some animal sound reminds her how small she is. (Or so I imagine.) She bolts back in!
Just a few days ago, this frost covered the dock. This afternoon, it’s 60°. Sometimes you just have to put on a warm hat and wait for things to change…

    1. It’s true that Jeff does have experience but there are many new things to learn…for him but especially for me! There are days that I wonder why I started this. I guess it is prompting memories and reflections for you! Thank you for commenting, and please continue as moved….

  3. On one of the Mexico blogs I follow, a prospective home buyer was questioning what to look for. I suggested an illustrated code check book ($18 on Amazon). Don’t tell anyone but I do lots of DIY without a permit, but I do go by code. I did once rewire an entire 1930 house with a homeowner permit.
