Final Inspections & Floor Sealing

We got the building permit 14 months ago. This week, final inspections began. That’s not bad for DIY home-building in the far-north! Also this week…a new ladder for the dock, a display of Northern Lights, and the start of sealing the concrete floor. (Yikes.) See the latest chapter in the creation of the Cabin at Many Moons in photos and captions below.

The little green sticker. Whew. Such a relief, especially with electrical. So complicated! And the codes differ from state-to-state and year-to-year. The plumbing inspector added his sticker a few days later and the mechanical inspector will visit next week. After that, just the final ok from the building inspector remains. So exciting, I don’t even mind the $1,400 in inspection fees.
After inspector visits, the floor-sealing began – a bit scary after months of research. I had trouble finding clear advice because our dyed-concrete floor (ground and polished, with radiant heat underneath) is apparently unusual. We went with an acrylic sealer that’s used and recommended by a local concrete manufacturer. I’m so glad to see the black floor that I’ve wanted all along. This will be a multi-day process, done in sections, waiting to dry and deciding on a 2nd coat. It’s tricky to work with since bubbling can result if the right technique isn’t used.
Much less risky, the installation of a ladder on the dock. I got this to make it easier to get into (and out of) the water. We have waterfront rocks, and this ladder drops onto sand. I’ve already used it a lot to get my water-jogging habit back. The water is warm this year, which helps.
Early this week, this glorious display of Northern Lights. I took this pic from the end of the dock at midnight. My phone camera picked up the colors. (My eyeballs saw white streaks.)
Besides being unusually warm, the water has been unusually calm. Geese squawked by the east side tonight. They like lawns, and we don’t have one, so they pass by us in favor of a neighbor who does. Fine. I don’t need to add cleaning goose poop to my list of tasks.
The west (land) side of the house doesn’t see much traffic even though it’s the front door. 😄 UPS does come here regularly, now that we pulled down more trees to give room to turn around.
This is the light I chose for the living area. I have a wood-and-metal thing going on. More photos to come once the stair railing is up and the floor is sealed.
